Day #45 – Lyons, KS to Rush Center, KS – 64 miles / 103 km

The brothers stopped at a Walmart. As always, one went inside and the other stayed with the bikes. Suddenly he heard loud sirens, and people ran into Walmart. No, it wasn’t a special sale 🙂 , it was a tornado drill. On the left, see a picture of a siren-post, one of many in the area.

As a commenter pointed out earlier, wind is the big challenge now. The terrain would allow the boys to ride 17-18 mph, but all they can do is an average of 9 mph, due to constant headwind. They were told not to expect any changes until they reach the Rockies.

Tonight Peter and Janos spend the night in a very small town that has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) and a population of 170. They sleep right next to a gas station, that is not in service, but the electric outlet on its outside wall still works… In the past week or so they don’t even set up the tent, they just put the sleeping bags on the ground.

States: 9    Total: 2207 miles / 3552 km

  1. Congratulations for once again making great daily mileage. It’s a good thing to know that headwinds will once again be at your back. The “Walmart” experience is just one more experience to talk abou upon your return. The GoJudoka is the log for writing a book of your experience along with the American hospitality. We fully appreciate all you are doing to bring donations and visbility to the work of the Blind Judo Foundation. Ron Peck, Blind Judo Foundation

  2. This afternoon and tomorrow afternoon the winds are supposed to shift around to the east providing them with a tailwind. Chance of a thundershower this evening
